Online Gambling Focus Group

Raymer, Pappas, Schwartz (from UNLV's Center for Gambling Research) and Pokerati

The World Series of Panel-discussions continues with what I like to think of as a circuit event on Wednesday. The Focus group has invited me and three others for a moderated roundtable that you could call Meet the Poker if David Gregory’s show were relegated to ESPN3.

But it should make for vigorous discourse providing valuable information … kinda like a think-tank for couch-based researchers and analysts. Details on the academic equivalent to a call-in show:

Toll-free Dial-In Number: (866) 951-1151
International Dial-In Number: (201) 590-2255
United Kingdom +44 08003581576
Conference # : 4999006

Join us for this roundtable teleconference on Wednesday May 18, 2011 at 10:00am PT/1:00pm ET to learn more about the economics of the multi-billion online gambling market and recent US government gaming legislation.

Topics include:

1. The history of today’s online gaming market
2. How Las Vegas feels about online gaming
3. “Black Friday” and its meaning for the online gaming business
4. What the online gaming business will look like in 2012

Moderator:

Michael Damphousse, CEO/CMO, Green Leads

Panelists:

David G. Schwartz, Director of Center for Gambling Research-UNLV
Dan Michalski, Founder/Editor, Pokerati.com
John Pappas, Executive Director, PPA (Poker Players Alliance)
Greg Raymer, 2004 WSOP Champion and Lawyer

DonkDown Radio Cold Call Show

05/11/2011

live poker radio donkdownFormer UB pro Hollywood Dave is our special in-studio guest.  We interview Raymond Davis and Bryan “Devo” Devonshire. The status of players getting paid on Full Tilt and UB is discussed. Hollywood Dave debates Druff about whether UB ever looked legit enough post-scandal to represent.  We talk about the Pokerstars FPP cashout controversy — is Pokerstars stealing upwards of $10 million from players?  We introduce new sponsor Hero Poker and organize a $300 freeroll during the show.  Some more technical fail kills about 20 minutes of the show from the archives (at about the 2:20 mark), but Druff stops that fail before it gets worse.

PokerStars Stiffing Affiliates, Pauly Says

Tony G fears bigger money problems for Full Tilt, calls out Lederer and Ivey

You gotta love the Hardcore Poker Show on Sirius 98 (moving to channel 158 tomorrow) … as they seem to know how to get the right guests at the right time to throw out a few doozies.

On yesterday’s show they talk to Pauly — one of the Top Two Podcasters on Tao of Pokerati — who lets it be known that while player money from PokerStars may indeed be filtering back to American players via US banks … affiliates got a form letter saying they would not be paid, and I think it sounds like he’s saying they have no intent to in the near future or ever.

Check with the Tao of Poker to see if he (or someone else) posts this letter. Until we see it I can’t know if Pauly — who removed his PokerStars affiliate banners — is simply speaking the aggressive truth or just playing squeaky-wheel hardball or both. He is a New Yorker, after all — from the Southern District no less!

UPDATE: He has posted it.

Tony G, the owner of PokerNews is next on the show — and really, for all the voices that have been clamoring since “Black Friday”, he’s one of the biggest names in poker with a direct connection to the money-flow from Full Tilt, Stars, and others to do an in-depth, candid interview.

Here’s a clip from the show to give you a taste.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

And click here for the whole episode.

Controversial for sure … but his words seem to be less publicity-whorey than usual. The G says any American depositing money on any site is high-risk, and payout could be unlikely. While believing that Stars seems to be making good, he sees signs that Full Tilt accounts could be in greater jeopardy — and calls out Howard Lederer and Phil Ivey specifically to address the issue (either in public or private) and possibly offer up their personal assets to take care of players.

Merchdawg’s Podcast Roundup

Black Friday, Poker Panic

It should be no surprise what the focus of this weeks Roundup will be with all that happened last Friday. Since the indictments were unsealed a week ago today everyone is hitting the airwaves to give their take on what has transpired with the DonkDown guys being the first group to hit the airwaves shortly followed by Marco on Quad Jacks.

Pregame.com

The team over at Pregame.com not only addressed how poker players have been affected by the indictments but also got some insight of how other people in the poker industry are being affected thanks to their guest Kristen Bihr. Bihr, who is a writer for PokerStarsBlog.com as well as being the PCA Ladies Event Champion, discusses how the poker media industry is being affected along with her current predicament of having the majority of her Ladies Event winnings tied up online. You can listen to the show in its entirety on the Pregame.com site

Quad Jacks Interviews

Already running 6 days consecutively with numerous host the show is going to come to an end shortly after reaching the 7 day mark for some rest. Numerous guest have joined over the past week, including Shaun Deeb, Katy Leibert, Daniel Negreanu, Gary Wise, BJ Nemeth, Kevin “KevMath” Mathers, and our very own Dan Michalski to break down what the indictments mean to not only the poker community but also personally to themselves.

Along with being a part of the show this past week KevMath also took a few of the interviews from the past 6 days and made them available for download. These are not in iTunes but they are indeed safe files.

Chuck Kidd Interview
Shaun Deeb Interview
Daniel Negrenu Surprise call into the show

On a side note a few of our favorite podcast have different host this week due to the regular host choosing to step aside either due to honoring the request to not speak or out of fear of causing problems due to their affiliation. This week ESPN’s The Poker Edge went on without Phil Gordon, though he did provide a short message to listeners that was played at the beginning of the show. The other pro to step aside this week is Dennis Phillips, who also spoke briefly at the beginning of the show to give a brief statement before stepping aside for the rest of the show to go on.

Manhunt for Wannabe Stratosphere Poker Robber

Las Vegas police seeking white male in gray hoodie

You can LOL all you want because nobody got shot … but as things usually go with poker robberies, attempted or otherwise, someone in the Stratosphere poker room probably has more than a sneaking suspicion of who attempted to rob a single table Wednesday night of its low-stakes casino chips. Or maybe not … because from the sounds of it there might not have been any players around … which makes sense, because as far as I know no one tweeted from the actual scene … so did it really happen?

Hear for yourself about the man police are seeking:

More Real Live Poker Radio Jimjabber

Donkdown Cold Call Show

live poker radio donkdownAll have heard by now about the constantly streaming broadcast by the Quadjacks crew … but before they existed, and perhaps giving them credibility from the get-go, the crew at Donkdown were the originators of raw poker radio. We used to never give much credence to anything live … if I couldn’t listen at my own convenience in podcast form, what was the point?

I’ll have to reassess my internet radio philosophy after the Pokerpacolypse dust settles … but in the meantime, I’m waiting in the wings now to go on the show where no one is supposed to be able to get away with any BS, but in exchange, anyone can get a say.

Should be a fun episode as some semblance of sensibility is starting to emerge. I suspect to be called out rather harshly for running an op-ed from a former UB lawyer telling people their money is presumably gone forever the day before the DOJ said they could get it back. (Clearly they’ve been reading and listening and didn’t want me to make any wagers, so thanks guys, for putting out such a statement before it was too late!)

Black Friday Ramblepalooza

2+2 Pokercast

Most of you have heard about the Radio Free Poker discussion going on over at QuadJacks/UStream. But if you get a chance, step away to listen to this week’s 2+2 PokerCast. (Sorry Marco for redirecting listeners … but don’t worry, they will be back.) I got to be part of a rather good lineup of informed voices answering Mike and Adam’s thoughtful questions.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

(And LOL when they refer to the lineup on the QJ never-ending stream as “the cast of Rent”.)

I show up at about the hour-and-a-half mark. But others on the episode (most of whom I’m looking forward to listening to, too) include:

Bill Rini — the old-school blogger and early poker-boom programmer, who btw was having a lot of really insightful posts in the week or so leading up to Friday, and has carried on from there.

I. Nelson Rose — one of the foremost authorities on gambling law in the United States. Be sure to check out his latest … an assessment of our current sitch, where he sees, too, the timing of the online poker indictments as “suspicious”.

Todd Terry — Manhattan attorney turned online pro. I think Jess has told me about this guy.

Mason Malmouth — the non-Sklansky of 2+2. Wrote a book or something. :)

Tonight I’m carrying on the Pokerati’s vigorous rambling with Gahagan, as we record Rabbit Hunt. And then back to Donkdown Radio (more LIVE stuff) where it all began on Wednesday.

Like seriously, how hooked up is anyone about to embark on a long road trip or do lotsa chores around the house?

Radio Free Poker

Live talk emerges from ashes, degens

A few interesting things have taken place since the implosion of online poker we’ve been warning you about here at Pokerati for about nine months became a reality.

We’ll save the 9/11 comparisons for later — because no one has died yet — and it’s just kinda coincidental that the DOJ has 9 charges against 11 defendants. But there seems to be a need for people to talk through these matters openly and honestly … and in kinda an organic way, the few truly independent operations (that don’t rely on Stars, Tilt, or UB for their existence) have come together to fill that void.

What began with appearances on an “EMERGENCY EPISODE!!!!” of Donkdown radio has migrated to a 24/7 live podcast put together by @AgentMarco from QuadJacks.

It’s been a rather loose-aggressive media emergence … with old-school cooperation in play. Pokerati has taken part … Tom Schneider, myself were on for the first few hours, Mark Gahagan is on now, and I’m about to rejoin to share some new information. Others that have been on have included Dutch Boyd, Scott Matusow, Micon-Brandon-and-Dandruff from Donkdown, The Maven, Kevmath, Pete the Blunt-smoker, Thomas the Rapper … as well as just regular ole online poker players sharing their stories about how a “little” government action has greatly affected their lives.

Anyhow, blah blah blah to infinity … the podcast that won’t stop is still going on — they’ve been going for 48 hours so far, with no sign of stopping, even if Marco eventually needs a nap. More than 1,000 listeners at this moment, so check out the chat room and keep it on for background music. Here’s the link:

http://www.ustream.tv/channel/day-2-qj-live-show

Funny how once the concept of “conversions” stopped mattering, 24/7 poker radio could finally emerge.

The Second Coming of PartyPoker? Sexton welcomes new Zynga players; Hellmuth shares his poker-brat services

mike sexton zynga pokercon partypoker wpt
Sexton: Ever-gracious ambassador.

I’m pretty sure you’re gonna be hearing about Zynga for awhile … not just because I still have lots of pictures and audio to unload from Zynga’s inaugural PokerCon at the Palms last weekend … but because, imho, as plenty of industry stalwarts seemed to recognize, this company that didn’t even exist in 2006 (that oh-so-glorious year of Jamie-Gold-boom-and-UIGEA-bust) has something that every other big-idea “revolutionary” poker undertaking has lacked since, well, PartyPoker.

Have a listen to Hall-of-Famer Mike Sexton, invited to simply share his brand of poker lore while mingling with Zynga players, give his quick take on the relevance of this relatively small little event and the booming company behind it:

Hellmuth: Party crasher?

Phil Hellmuth musta seen something more than just a $100k freeroll going on, too. Whether delivering a “bonus” to Pokercon attendees out of the kindness of his heart or just because his feelings were hurt for not being asked to take part in Zynga festivities, the “poker brat” slipped in as an uninvited (but presumably still welcome?) guest and revealed his presence at the Pokercon final table to a smattering of gasps and boos. When poker’s self-proclaimed badboy tried to educate the fans that they were supposed to boo him, the nice Zynga people didn’t exactly oblige — giving him instead a polite round of applause. You can tell, however, at least a few in the crowd understood the subtext of his unscripted exchange with host Ali Nejad — effectively trying to put PokerStars back in its (2nd) place.
